Vance, Rubio to host Denmark-Greenland talks

Published on: January 13, 2026 9:00 PM

COPENHAGEN: Denmark and Greenland will meet U.S. Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Wednesday. The meeting comes amid President Donald Trump’s renewed push to take control of Greenland, an autonomous territory under Denmark. Danish officials said the discussions aim to address sovereignty concerns directly.

Danish Foreign Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen and Greenlandic counterpart Vivian Motzfeldt requested the meeting following Trump’s threats. Rasmussen confirmed Vance will host the discussion at the White House. Officials described the session as an opportunity for open dialogue and direct engagement on the issue.

Greenland has emphasized that it should remain under NATO protection. Rasmussen said the purpose of the meeting is “to move this whole discussion into a room where we can look each other in the eye and talk.” Both Denmark and Greenland aim to clarify U.S. intentions and safeguard the island’s autonomy.

Trump first suggested a U.S. takeover of Greenland in 2019, facing strong opposition from lawmakers and even members of his own party. Despite centuries of Danish rule, Greenland has been moving steadily toward independence since 1979, with all major political parties supporting full autonomy.

Finally, the meeting is expected to reaffirm Denmark’s control while addressing U.S. strategic interests in the Arctic. Officials from both sides said dialogue remains critical to avoid tensions and maintain regional stability in the strategically important Arctic region.
