Greenland’s Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen declared “enough is enough,” rejecting US President Donald Trump’s renewed remarks about taking over the Arctic island. Denmark and European allies also affirmed that Greenland’s future must be decided by its people, dismissing any notion of annexation.
Trump made the comments a day after US special forces captured Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro, linking strategic ambitions in Latin America to interest in Greenland. He said in an interview that Greenland is needed for defense, promising to revisit the topic in the coming weeks.

On December 21, Trump appointed Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry as special envoy to Greenland, who has expressed support for incorporating the territory into the US. Analysts say Greenland’s strategic location between Europe and North America and its mineral resources make it geopolitically important for Washington.
Nordic and European leaders quickly voiced support for Greenland and Denmark. Finland’s President Alexander Stubb stressed that only Greenland and Denmark can decide the island’s fate. France’s President Emmanuel Macron also condemned any predatory ambitions toward the territory.
