Yemen’s STC welcomes Saudi dialogue offer

Published on: January 4, 2026 3:19 PM

Yemen’s Southern Transitional Council (STC) welcomed Saudi Arabia’s offer for dialogue, calling it a “genuine opportunity for serious talks” that could protect the aspirations of southern Yemenis amid recent violence. The statement signals a potential de-escalation in the southern region.

The Saudi Ministry of Foreign Affairs invited southern Yemeni factions to a forum in Riyadh to develop a “comprehensive vision” for fair solutions addressing the southern cause. Officials emphasized that the initiative aims to promote lasting peace and stability in Yemen.

The dialogue offer follows recent clashes in Hadramout and al-Mahra provinces, where the STC launched a major offensive last month. The fighting prompted Saudi Arabia to conduct targeted strikes along border areas, citing national security concerns and the need to protect its citizens.

Tensions between Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, both coalition partners in Yemen, have intensified. Riyadh has accused Abu Dhabi of supporting the STC militarily, a claim the UAE denies, stressing that it continues to support Saudi security efforts.

In response to the escalation, the UAE expressed deep concern and called on all Yemeni factions to exercise restraint. Officials urged parties to prioritize dialogue over conflict to maintain security, stability, and progress toward a sustainable political solution.

Analysts believe the Saudi-led initiative could open a pathway for negotiation, reducing violence in southern Yemen. If successful, it may strengthen regional coordination, curb further conflict, and create conditions for long-term governance and development across affected provinces.
