Stranger Things finale sparks cutgate backlash

Published on: December 30, 2025 4:24 PM

Ending a long-running series proved controversial as Stranger Things fans reacted strongly after the second part of season five premiered on Boxing Day ahead of the New Year’s Day finale. Viewers quickly flooded social media with complaints, expressing disappointment over pacing, storytelling choices, and unresolved emotional arcs. Consequently, online discussions intensified within hours of the release. The backlash reflected how deeply invested audiences remain after a decade-long journey.

Within just two days, more than 300,000 fans signed an online petition demanding the release of alleged unseen footage from the final episodes. Supporters believe important scenes were removed before release, weakening character development and narrative closure. The controversy soon gained the nickname “Cutgate” across platforms. As a result, the petition continued gaining traction globally.

The petition organiser, known as Wennii J, claimed the final episodes felt incomplete after such a long wait. She argued that fans deserved transparency and creative respect following ten years of emotional investment. According to her statement, key moments involving beloved characters appeared missing. Therefore, many viewers felt the ending failed to meet expectations.

Fans also pointed to confusion around major plot points, including character relationships and sudden emotional shifts. Some circulated a Google document allegedly detailing entire plotlines and character arcs changed or removed mid-filming. However, these claims remain unverified and speculative. Netflix has not confirmed the existence of any deleted scenes so far.

Meanwhile, actor Randy Havens, who plays Scott Clarke, publicly dismissed the rumours on social media, denying any alternate or hidden version of the show. He urged fans not to believe unverified online claims. The show’s creators, the Duffer brothers, have not yet commented on the controversy. As debate continues, the finale remains under intense fan scrutiny.
