Israel deploys world’s first 100 kW laser

Published on: December 30, 2025 10:15 PM

Israel has operationalized the world’s first 100 kW high-power laser weapon, called Iron Beam. The system can destroy drones, rockets, and mortars. Defense officials say it offers low-cost, precise air defense.

Developed by Rafael Advanced Defense Systems, Iron Beam has completed operational tests and is now active with the Israel Defence Forces. It targets short-range threats at low altitudes where traditional systems struggle. The Defense Ministry calls the deployment a historic moment for military technology.

One major advantage of Iron Beam is its cost-effectiveness. Traditional interceptions can cost tens of thousands of dollars, while Iron Beam costs just a few cents per hit. It also operates quietly, reducing noise during engagements and complementing Israel’s existing multi-layered defense.

Iron Beam will work alongside Iron Dome, David’s Sling, and the Arrow program. This combination defends against short, medium, and long-range threats, enhancing overall protection. Officials say the laser will not replace current systems but fill gaps against low-cost drones.

The system took over ten years to develop since its first reveal in 2014. Recent intensive tests confirmed it can track, target, and destroy threats effectively. Experts predict it could influence military strategies worldwide and shape the future of air defense.
