China escalated military pressure on Taiwan after firing rockets into waters north and south of the island during large-scale war games designed to simulate a potential blockade scenario. These drills involved new amphibious assault ships, bomber aircraft, and destroyers operating in close coordination. Military officials confirmed that live-firing activities affected sea and airspace surrounding multiple areas near Taiwan. As a result, regional tensions rose sharply on the second day of the exercises.
China’s Eastern Theatre Command said the drills, named “Justice Mission 2025,” included naval and air force units rehearsing strikes on maritime and aerial targets around Taiwan. Additionally, forces practiced anti-submarine operations to the island’s north and south. Video footage released by the military showed a mobile long-range rocket launcher firing into the sea. Consequently, the exercises marked the most expansive and closest maneuvers China has conducted near Taiwan so far.

Meanwhile, Taiwan closely monitored the situation as security officials assessed whether missiles might be fired over the island, similar to previous exercises. Authorities confirmed live-firing drills took place north of Taiwan, with debris entering its contiguous zone. However, Taiwan’s leadership stressed that frontline troops were fully prepared to defend the island. At the same time, officials emphasized they did not seek further escalation.
The drills also disrupted regional transport routes, as several flight paths near Taiwan were affected, although international flights continued to operate without cancellation. Routes to nearby offshore islands were temporarily blocked, impacting thousands of passengers. Analysts warned that a blockade would severely disrupt global trade passing through the Taiwan Strait. Notably, trillions of dollars in shipping and aviation activity rely on these strategic routes each year.

China also deployed coastguard vessels around Taiwan’s waters, leading to tense standoffs with Taiwanese ships using close parallel navigation. Military activity around the island surged, with numerous aircraft and naval vessels operating nearby. Officials stated the exercises tested coordination for sea control, air defense, and assault readiness. Ultimately, the drills highlighted China’s growing confidence and increasing realism in preparing for potential conflict scenarios.
