US weighs major new action against Venezuela

Published on: November 23, 2025 4:49 PM

The United States is preparing a new phase of operations targeting Venezuela as it increases pressure on President Nicolás Maduro’s government, while several options remain under active review. However, officials have not revealed when these actions may begin or whether the final decision has already been signed.

Moreover, U.S. officials say the first steps will likely include covert CIA operations aimed at weakening Maduro’s authority, as Washington accuses him of enabling drug trafficking that harms Americans. Maduro strongly denies any role in the illegal narcotics trade and warns that Venezuelans will resist foreign attempts to remove him from power.

As tension rises, the U.S. military has already deployed significant forces to the Caribbean for months, including a major aircraft carrier strike group with a nuclear submarine and advanced fighter jets. Additionally, American forces have carried out at least 21 maritime operations since September, killing more than 80 suspected traffickers, which human rights groups criticize as unlawful.

Furthermore, U.S. officials plan to declare the Cartel de los Soles a foreign terrorist organization, granting new legal authority to strike the group’s assets and infrastructure. Washington claims Maduro controls the cartel, but he rejects the allegation, and limited diplomatic talks between the two countries continue without clarity on any progress.

Meanwhile, Venezuela’s armed forces struggle with shortages, outdated equipment, and low morale, prompting the government to consider guerrilla‑style defense strategies. State media has promoted long‑term resistance plans, suggesting small units could use sabotage and hit‑and‑run tactics across hundreds of locations if an invasion occurs.

In addition, the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration has warned airlines about dangerous conditions over Venezuelan airspace, leading several carriers to cancel flights. As Maduro prepares to celebrate his 63rd birthday, the region faces heightened uncertainty over whether diplomatic solutions or direct confrontation will shape the days ahead.
