Spain’s world number one tennis star, Carlos Alcaraz, has announced that he will miss the Davis Cup Final 8 tournament in Italy this week due to a hamstring injury. The 22-year-old two-time Wimbledon champion shared the news on social media on Tuesday, describing himself as “heartbroken” to miss the chance to represent his country.

“I am very sorry to announce that I will not be able to play with Spain in the Davis Cup in Bologna. I have swelling in my right hamstring and the medical advice is not to play,” Alcaraz said. “I’ve always said that playing for Spain is the greatest thing there is and I was really looking forward to helping the team fight for the Davis Cup trophy.”

Alcaraz’s withdrawal follows his defeat by Italian rival Jannik Sinner, the world number two, in the ATP Finals final in Turin on Sunday. Sinner also announced that he will miss the tournament, while Italy’s second-highest ranked player, Lorenzo Musetti, has pulled out of the country’s Davis Cup defence.

With Spain missing its top player, the competition in Bologna is expected to be fiercely contested. Austria, France, Belgium, Czech Republic, Argentina, and Germany remain in contention for the prestigious team trophy. Italy will aim to claim a third consecutive Davis Cup title on home soil.

The absence of Alcaraz and Sinner significantly reshapes the tournament dynamics, leaving other nations with a greater opportunity to challenge for victory. Spain will now have to rely on its remaining squad members to uphold its Davis Cup ambitions.
