The opposition alliance Tehreek-i-Tahafuz-i-Ayin-i-Pakistan (TTAP) held a protest outside Parliament House on Tuesday as part of its nationwide campaign against the recently enacted 27th Amendment. The legislation, signed into law on November 13, has faced criticism from opposition parties and members of the legal community, including former and sitting judges, who describe it as an “attack” on judicial independence.

TTAP, formed in April last year as a coalition of six opposition parties including the PTI, vowed last Friday to vigorously oppose the amendment and “restore the Constitution to its original form.” During Tuesday’s protest, members held banners reading “Death to dictatorship, long live democracy,” “27th Amendment rejected,” and “Subjugation of the judiciary is the public’s subjugation.”

Key leaders present at the protest included TTAP chair Mehmood Khan Achakzai, Majlis Wahdat-i-Muslimeen chief and TTAP Vice-Chairman Senator Allama Raja Nasir Abbas, PTI Secretary General Salman Akram Raja, and former National Assembly speaker Asad Qaiser. Protesters also plan to march from Parliament House to the Supreme Court in opposition to the amendment.

The TTAP’s protest follows other demonstrations across the country. On Monday, PTI MPAs staged a walk from the Punjab Assembly to Charing Cross on The Mall to express their opposition. Additionally, the alliance has announced plans to present a resolution in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly against the 27th Amendment.

Since formalising its organisational structure in July, the TTAP has declared blanket support for all anti-government protests, signalling a coordinated effort by opposition parties to challenge the constitutional changes brought about by the 27th Amendment.
