Babar Azam ends century drought as Pakistan seal ODI series

Published on: November 15, 2025 11:17 AM

RAWALPINDI: Star batter Babar Azam ended his nearly two-year century drought by scoring an unbeaten 102 to lead Pakistan to an eight-wicket victory over Sri Lanka and secure the ODI series on Thursday. The right-hander’s masterful innings helped Pakistan chase down 289 with 10 balls to spare, giving them an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match series.

Pakistan’s chase was kickstarted by a blistering 77-run opening stand between Fakhar Zaman and Saim Ayub. Saim contributed 33 off 25 balls before falling to Dushmantha Chameera. Babar walked in at No.3 and anchored the innings, forging a century partnership with Fakhar and taking complete control in the middle overs. Fakhar was dismissed for 78 off 93 balls, but Babar and Mohammad Rizwan combined for an unbroken 112-run stand to finish the chase. Rizwan contributed a composed 51 off 54 deliveries.

Earlier, Pakistan’s bowlers set the platform for victory, restricting Sri Lanka to 288/8. Abrar Ahmed struck thrice, including key wickets of Kusal Mendis and captain Charith Asalanka, while Haris Rauf also claimed three scalps. Mohammad Wasim Jr chipped in with one wicket, ensuring Sri Lanka never fully capitalised on their starts. Kamindu Mendis top-scored with 44, while Wanindu Hasaranga’s late surge of 37* helped push the total to a competitive score.

With the series now sealed, Pakistan will aim to complete a clean sweep when the final ODI is played on Sunday at the same venue. Babar’s century, his 20th in ODIs, marks a significant return to form and a timely boost for the team ahead of future challenges.
