ISLAMABAD: President Asif Ali Zardari has signed the 27th Constitutional Amendment Bill, making it part of Pakistan’s Constitution. The bill was passed by both houses of Parliament. It received two-thirds majority approval in the National Assembly and Senate.
The Senate approved the amendment after a session chaired by Senate Chairman Yousaf Raza Gillani. Federal Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar presented the new text for clause-by-clause approval. The amendment includes eight new provisions, with key changes to Article 6, Clause 2.

Under the amendment, serious acts of treason cannot be legitimized by any court. The text adds the words “Constitutional Court” along with High Court and Supreme Court for enforcement. This ensures judicial clarity and strengthens constitutional safeguards.
The amendment also addresses the office of the Chief Justice. The current Chief Justice will retain the title until the end of their tenure. Afterward, the most senior judge of the Supreme Court or Federal Constitutional Court will assume the title of Chief Justice of Pakistan.

The federal cabinet convened today to review laws in light of the amendment. Officials said changes will follow the new constitutional provisions and align national laws with the updated framework.
