BUENOS AIRES– OpenAI and Sur Energy have signed a letter of intent for a massive $25 billion data center project in Argentina, the government announced Friday — a move that could transform the country into a regional hub for artificial intelligence infrastructure.
According to a government statement, the planned facility would have a capacity of up to 500 megawatts, making it one of the largest AI computing centers in Latin America. The project will be structured under Argentina’s RIGI tax incentive scheme, which offers favorable terms to attract large-scale investments. Officials said the initiative would be “one of the largest technology and energy infrastructure projects in Argentina’s history.”

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman confirmed the development on social media, calling it the first “Stargate Argentina” project — part of a broader plan to expand the company’s data infrastructure worldwide. “We are proud to announce plans to launch Stargate Argentina, an exciting new infrastructure project in partnership with one of the country’s leading energy companies, Sur Energy,” Altman said. “It’s the first Stargate project in Latin America — a region full of talent, creativity, and ambition,” he added.
The announcement follows OpenAI’s developer conference earlier this week, where the company unveiled a suite of new tools and partnerships, including collaborations with Spotify, Zillow, and Mattel. OpenAI, which now boasts over 800 million weekly ChatGPT users, recently became the world’s most valuable startup with a $500 billion valuation after a major secondary share sale. If completed, the Argentina project would mark a major milestone in OpenAI’s global expansion and could cement the country’s role as a key player in AI and renewable energy innovation.
