Cyclone SHAKHTI weakens but PMD warns of rough seas

Published on: October 6, 2025 6:10 PM

The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has issued a fresh advisory regarding the cyclonic storm SHAKHTI, which has now weakened over the west-central and adjoining northwest Arabian Sea. Despite the weakening, the storm continues to generate strong winds and high sea waves, posing potential risks for coastal areas of Sindh and Balochistan over the next 24 hours.

In its latest update, the PMD reported that SHAKHTI is currently centered around Latitude 19.6°N and Longitude 60.4°E, approximately 910 kilometers southwest of Karachi. The system is likely to move east-southeastwards, gradually weakening into a depression by the next 24 hours. However, rough weather conditions at sea are expected to persist until the storm fully dissipates.

Under the storm’s influence, isolated light rain is expected in coastal districts of Sindh and Balochistan. Although the rainfall may bring temporary relief from the dry weather, authorities have urged residents to stay alert and follow official updates, as high-speed winds and strong tides could still impact the region.

Sea conditions remain extremely rough, with wind speeds ranging between 70 to 90 kilometers per hour, gusting up to 90 near the Sindh coast. The PMD has strongly advised fishermen to avoid venturing into deep waters until October 7, warning that sea conditions could remain unpredictable despite gradual improvement afterward.

Moreover, gale-force winds near the system’s center are reaching 80 to 90 kilometers per hour, with gusts peaking at 100. These speeds are expected to reduce gradually over the next day, stabilizing to around 45 to 55 kilometers per hour as the storm weakens further. The PMD continues to monitor the system closely and has assured that regular updates will be provided to ensure public safety.
