The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has approved the adoption of Wi-Fi 7 and future Wi-Fi generations in the 6 GHz band (5925–6425 MHz), aligning with parameters earlier cleared for Wi-Fi 6E. The decision places Pakistan among the early adopters in the Asia-Pacific region, underscoring its ambition to lead in digital innovation.
Wi-Fi 7 promises ultra-high data rates, low latency, and robust reliability—capable of supporting 8K streaming, AR/VR applications, and industrial automation. By reducing congestion in older frequency bands and cutting broadband delivery costs, it is expected to enhance connectivity across homes, small businesses, universities, hospitals, and emerging smart cities.
PTA said the move reflects its commitment to bridging the digital divide, boosting network resilience, and advancing an inclusive digital economy.
Meanwhile, Federal Minister for Information Technology and Telecommunication Shaza Fatima Khawaja announced that the government plans to launch 5G services within months in seven major cities. Speaking at the inauguration of the 26th ITCN Asia Expo in Karachi, she acknowledged the financial challenges of rolling out 5G but emphasized that measures were underway to provide more reliable internet access nationwide.
The minister also highlighted that information technology would serve as a “core element” of the recently signed Pakistan-Saudi agreement, which aims to strengthen digital infrastructure and accelerate economic growth.
On the broader economic outlook, she said Pakistan had moved past fears of default, with inflation easing and macroeconomic stability returning. “Karachi carries the weight of the country’s economic development,” she added.
