
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif met IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva and World Bank President Ajay Banga during the 80th UN General Assembly session in New York. He discussed Pakistan’s economic reforms and future cooperation with both leaders. Shehbaz appreciated the IMF’s strong partnership and timely financial support through various programs, which helped stabilize Pakistan’s economy.
During the meeting, Shehbaz asked the IMF to factor in the recent devastating floods’ impact when reviewing Pakistan’s economic progress. An IMF team is scheduled to visit Pakistan for the second review of the Extended Fund Facility. This review will determine approval of a $1 billion tranche, crucial for Pakistan’s economic recovery amid rising challenges like food inflation.

Georgieva expressed sympathy for flood victims and stressed the importance of damage assessments to guide recovery efforts. She praised Pakistan’s commitment to sound economic policies and promised continued IMF support. Meanwhile, Shehbaz thanked the World Bank for its long-standing aid during crises, including the 2022 floods and the COVID-19 pandemic.

In his talks with World Bank President Ajay Banga, the prime minister highlighted Pakistan’s reform agenda, focusing on energy, privatisation, resource mobilisation, and climate resilience. Banga praised Pakistan’s reforms and reaffirmed the Bank’s support, including a $40 billion commitment under the new Country Partnership Framework (2026–2035).
