CM Maryam introduces color-coded waste bins in Punjab

Published on: September 21, 2025 5:09 PM

Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has launched a modern waste management initiative by introducing color-coded dustbins across the province. The move, described as the “Smart Waste Management Process,” aims to reduce pollution, promote recycling, and improve environmental standards. In its first phase, all public and private educational institutions will be required to adopt the system by installing separate bins for different types of waste before the deadline.

The Punjab government’s notification explains that five different colored bins will be placed in schools and colleges. Yellow bins will be used for paper and cardboard, green bins for glass pieces, bottles, and laboratory waste, while grey bins will collect fruit peels, leftover food, and other organic material. Similarly, red bins will store metal waste, and orange bins will be used for plastic waste. This separation will help ensure proper recycling and reuse of waste materials.

Senior Minister for Environment and Climate Change Maryam Aurangzeb has been tasked with supervising the project, while Education Minister Rana Sikandar and Local Government Minister Zeeshan Malik have been given strict targets. Schools have until September 30 to comply, with inspections beginning on October 1. Institutions that fail to meet the requirements will face heavy fines, highlighting the government’s seriousness in enforcing eco-friendly practices.

To further support schools and colleges, the Punjab Waste Management Helpline (1139) has been activated for waste collection. The Local Government & Community Development Department will also assist in managing the bins, ensuring that the system runs smoothly. Meanwhile, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) will strictly monitor implementation and carry out inspections. Schools achieving the required standards will be recognized with certificates, encouraging competition for compliance and excellence.

Officials believe this initiative will not only reduce the growing piles of garbage but also encourage a culture of recycling and environmental responsibility among students. By involving educational institutions, the government hopes to instill sustainable habits in the younger generation. This innovative step, according to experts, marks a major stride in Punjab’s fight against pollution, with the potential to transform waste management practices in the province for years to come.
