The Islamabad High Court (IHC) on Wednesday issued a written order regarding barring IHC’s Justice Tariq Mehmood Jahangiri from performing judicial work in fake degree case.
A division bench comprising Chief Justice Sardar Sarfaraz Dogar and Justice Azam Khan have issued a two-page order to stop Justice Tariq Jahangiri from working.
The written order states that Justice Jahangiri is being stopped from working until the decision of the Supreme Court Judicial Council, there are sensitive questions in this case, a question related to the judge’s competence.
The IHC said that the court was informed that a complaint is also pending in the Supreme Judicial Council. It has ordered Justice Tariq Mehmood Jahangiri to stop working as a judge until the decision of the Supreme Judicial Council.
The written order has sought assistance from the Attorney General and Advocate General Islamabad on October 21, while another petitioner’s application to become a party in the case has also been approved. app
Barrister Jahangir Jadun has applied to the Registrar of the Islamabad High Court (IHC) to obtain the audio-video recording of Tuesday’s hearing in Justice Tariq Mahmood Jahangiri’s suspension case in the chief justice’s court.
The application argues that while the media reported that no order had been passed, it was later learned after the hearing that Justice Jahangiri had been suspended from judicial work.
The application specifically requests the audio-video recording of IHC court 1 from September 16 at 1pm, with a USB drive also submitted for the recording.
This motion comes after a two?member bench led by IHC Chief Justice Sardar Mohammad Sarfraz Dogar, sitting with Justice Mohammad Azam Khan, issued the order on Tuesday on a petition filed by advocate Mian Daud against Justice Jahangiri.
In addition to suspending his judicial functions, the bench appointed two senior lawyers – Barrister Zafarullah Khan and former Attorney General Ashtar Ausaf – as amici curiae to assist in considering the validity and maintainability of the case.
Meanwhile, a revised duty roster was released by the court, in which Justice Jahangiri is not included in any bench assignments, including both single? and division?bench hearings.
On August 31, 2024, Karachi University’s Syndicate annulled the allegedly “invalid” degree of Justice Jahangiri on the recommendations of the university’s Unfair Means (UFM) Committee.
The decision came just hours after the detention of Syndicate member Dr Riaz Ahmed, who was reportedly picked up by police in an apparent attempt to prevent him from attending the key meeting.
However, the Sindh High Court on September 5, 2024, suspended Karachi University’s decision.
