Punjab floods displace millions, rescue efforts intensify

Published on: August 31, 2025 12:32 PM

Massive floods caused by overflowing Chenab, Ravi, and Sutlej rivers have affected more than 1.5 million people across Punjab, submerging 2,038 villages, displacing thousands, and claiming at least 30 lives.

Senior minister Marriyum Aurangzeb confirmed that Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz is supervising relief operations, with over 481,000 people shifted to safer areas through 808 rescue boats, alongside 511 relief camps and 351 medical camps operating continuously.

Livestock protection has also been prioritized, with more than 405,000 animals relocated and 321 veterinary camps established. Authorities credited early warnings and anti-encroachment drives for reducing potential human loss despite the severity of floods.

Meanwhile, floodwaters continue to threaten Kasur, Multan, and Chishtian, where historic surges in the Sutlej River have destroyed crops and submerged dozens of villages, forcing thousands to evacuate under extremely challenging conditions.

Additional districts including Sialkot, Rajanpur, Bahawalpur, Hafizabad, and Gujranwala face growing devastation as breaches and rising water levels submerge villages, damage crops, and cut off road connectivity, leaving many residents stranded.

National and provincial disaster authorities have dispatched thousands of relief ration bags to Sialkot, Narowal, and other flood-hit districts, vowing to intensify aid and rehabilitation efforts as the situation remains critical.
