Cambodia has officially nominated U.S. President Donald Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize. The nomination credits Trump’s role in easing tensions between Cambodia and Thailand. Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet praised Trump’s “extraordinary leadership” in preventing a deadly border conflict.
According to CNN, citing Reuters, Hun Manet made the announcement via Facebook late Thursday. He also shared a letter reportedly sent to the Norwegian Nobel Committee. The letter praised Trump’s mediation as a rare success in reducing tensions in one of the world’s most sensitive regions.

The letter noted that Trump’s timely intervention helped avert a devastating conflict. It stated that his efforts saved lives and paved the way for peace. On July 26, Trump had spoken by phone with leaders of both Cambodia and Thailand. These talks broke a deadlock in negotiations following severe clashes.
Just two days later, on July 28, both countries reached a ceasefire during talks in Malaysia. The agreement also allowed Southeast Asian observers to monitor the situation. The five-day conflict had killed 43 people and displaced over 300,000. It began with minor gunfire but escalated into heavy artillery and airstrikes, including the use of an F-16 jet.
This nomination follows earlier praise from Cambodia’s deputy prime minister, who thanked Trump for cutting U.S. import duties on Cambodian goods from 49% to 19%. Pakistan and Israel have also previously supported Trump’s Nobel Peace Prize bid for his involvement in easing regional tensions.
