After ten days of tireless efforts, Rescue 1122 teams on Friday recovered the body of a 25-year-old girl and the car that was swept away by floodwaters in Islamabad. The tragic incident took place during heavy rains when the girl was traveling with her father, retired Colonel Qazi Ishaq, in a private housing society. Both were reported missing after their vehicle was dragged into a storm drain.
According to rescue officials, the car was discovered beneath Kak Pul in Rawalpindi inside a rainwater drain. The girl’s body was also found in the same area, marking a heartbreaking end to the days-long search. Earlier, on July 23, rescue workers had recovered Colonel Ishaq’s body from Swan River, but the girl remained untraced until now.
The incident occurred when heavy rainfall caused deep water to accumulate on the road, trapping their car. Despite efforts to restart the vehicle, the strong current carried the car away. Emergency teams had been working nonstop to trace the vehicle and the missing girl since the day of the flood.
Authorities noted that the vehicle was first partially found when rescuers discovered its bonnet and door under the Swan Bridge. This discovery gave rescuers a new lead, allowing them to narrow down the location and intensify their search in that area.
This incident highlights the dangers posed by flash floods during monsoon seasons in urban areas, especially near unprotected storm drains and underpasses. Despite the best efforts of emergency services, rapid water flow often makes rescue and recovery operations extremely difficult.
Officials are urging citizens to avoid low-lying areas during heavy rainfall and not attempt to drive through flooded roads. The public has also been advised to stay alert and follow weather advisories to prevent such tragedies in the future.
