Rawal dam spillways to open today as water levels rise

Published on: July 31, 2025 11:27 AM

Authorities have announced that the spillways of Rawal Dam will be opened today (Thursday) after the reservoir reached the critical level of 1,750.40 feet. This decision comes as a part of precautionary steps taken by the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) to control the rising water levels caused by ongoing monsoon inflows. The NDMA confirmed that the water inflow has steadily increased due to recent heavy rainfall in the region.

According to the NDMA spokesperson, the action is being taken to ensure the safety of the dam and surrounding areas. He added that a preemptive warning has already been issued to all relevant institutions, including rescue teams and district administrations. These alerts are designed to help authorities stay prepared for the possible consequences of the spillway opening, especially increased water flow downstream in the Korang Nullah.

In view of the anticipated water discharge, the general public has been strongly advised to avoid crossing Korang Nullah and nearby low-lying areas. Temporary bridges and underpasses in vulnerable locations may be particularly dangerous due to the sudden rise in water levels. Officials have warned that even short exposure near the nullah during peak discharge hours could pose a serious threat to life and property.

Furthermore, the NDMA has instructed local administrations and emergency services to remain on high alert throughout the day. Coordination between departments, such as WASA, CDA, and Rescue 1122, has been strengthened to ensure quick response in case of any untoward incidents. Special monitoring teams are also being deployed to assess ground conditions in real time and report any emerging threats to public safety.

Authorities emphasized that such preemptive steps are crucial during the monsoon season when water levels can rise rapidly, often without warning. They also noted that public cooperation is essential to prevent accidents and ensure smooth operation during the controlled release of excess water. Citizens are encouraged to stay informed through official announcements and avoid spreading unverified information on social media.

The opening of the spillways is a standard safety protocol followed whenever the water level approaches the dam’s maximum limit. While it may cause short-term inconvenience to some, it is necessary to reduce the risk of flooding and protect downstream communities. NDMA officials assured that all necessary measures have been taken to manage the situation effectively.
