PM chairs key cabinet meeting today with six-point agenda

Published on: July 16, 2025 1:32 PM

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif is set to chair an important federal cabinet meeting today in Islamabad, where a six-point agenda covering major national matters will be discussed. The session aims to address issues related to trade, health, legislation, and public welfare. Key decisions are expected that could directly impact the economy and citizen well-being.

One of the main items on the agenda is the approval of a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between Pakistan and Arab states. This agreement is expected to boost bilateral trade, attract fresh investments, and strengthen economic ties across the region. Officials believe the deal will open new doors for Pakistani exporters and create job opportunities.

Moreover, the cabinet is also expected to approve the Sea Cargo Shipping Documents Bill 2025. This draft legislation is designed to streamline and modernize maritime trade processes, ensuring smoother cargo documentation and reducing delays in sea transport operations. The move is aimed at increasing efficiency in Pakistan’s port operations.

To support public health, the government is likely to allow the import of unregistered medicines. This step will ensure the availability of life-saving and essential drugs that are currently in short supply. Health officials have welcomed the proposal, saying it will help bridge critical gaps in the pharmaceutical supply chain.

Another important item is the anticipated approval of a 15% increase in EOBI pensions, effective from January 1, 2025. This move will offer much-needed financial relief to pensioners and retired workers, helping them cope with rising inflation and living costs. The proposal has been widely appreciated by social welfare advocates.

Additionally, the National Cannabis Control and Regulatory Policy 2025 will be presented during the meeting. The session will also include ratification of decisions made by the Cabinet Committee on Legislative Affairs, along with further discussions on key national policies and reforms.
