In a major step toward boosting regional trade, Pakistan and Russia are set to launch a freight train service next month. The pilot project, scheduled for August, will run from Lahore to Russia, passing through Iran, Turkmenistan, and Kazakhstan. Officials from the Foreign Office confirmed that preparations are in their final stage.
The first train will consist of 16 wagons and will carry goods from Russia, Turkmenistan, and Kazakhstan to Pakistan. This new transport route is expected to significantly reduce cargo delivery time and costs, making trade more efficient between South Asia and Central Asia.
Moreover, this initiative will not only enhance trade ties but also create new job opportunities in Pakistan. Officials believe the project will play a key role in opening new economic corridors and strengthening regional connectivity. It reflects growing cooperation between Islamabad and Moscow.
Just recently, Special Assistant to the Prime Minister Tariq Fatemi and Special Assistant for Industries Haroon Akhtar visited Russia. During the visit, both countries signed a protocol to revive Pakistan Steel Mills, highlighting deeper economic collaboration.
Additionally, Russian Consul-General Andrey V. Federov has expressed his country’s desire to double the current $1.8 billion trade volume with Pakistan. He noted that ties between the two nations are steadily improving and hold great potential for future partnerships.
With the freight train service set to begin soon, experts see this development as a turning point for Pakistan’s trade strategy. It represents a shift toward stronger ties with regional powers and a commitment to economic growth through connectivity.
