After recently increasing the salaries of Punjab’s ministers, the provincial government has also decided to raise their leave allowances. Now, ministers, the Speaker, and Deputy Speaker of the Punjab Assembly will receive their full salaries even when they are on leave.
The Punjab Assembly passed the Punjab Public Representatives (Amendment) Bill 2025 in its latest session. This bill amends the Punjab Minister (Salary, Allowance, Privileges) Act 1975 to ensure no salary deductions during leave. Previously, ministers got a reduced payment during leave. For example, a minister with a salary of 100,000 PKR received only 74,000 PKR for one month of leave.
With the new changes, ministers will now get their full monthly salary of 960,000 PKR during leave. Similarly, the Speaker of the Punjab Assembly, who earned 125,000 PKR monthly, used to receive 37,000 PKR during leave.
Now, the Speaker will get the full salary of 950,000 PKR even on leave. The Deputy Speaker’s monthly salary is 120,000 PKR, but their leave allowance was only 37,000 PKR; this has been increased to a full salary of 775,000 PKR.
These amendments were necessary after the salary increase to keep the leave allowance aligned with the updated pay. The previous leave allowance was still based on older, lower salaries. This move ensures ministers and assembly officials receive consistent pay whether working or on leave.
