The government has officially launched a major upgrade project for Skardu International Airport, aiming to enhance air connectivity in Gilgit-Baltistan. The Rs180 million initiative is expected to significantly boost tourism and trade in the region. Officials say this step will help integrate Skardu more effectively with national and global networks.
The launch event was held at a local resort in Skardu, where Swiss firm Intairplan and its Pakistani partners presented the project roadmap. The team is responsible for the design and development of the upgraded airport. Senior officials from the Pakistan Airports Authority (PAA), local administration, armed forces, and other stakeholders attended the event.
PAA officials stated that the design consultancy has already been awarded and is underway. Construction is likely to begin within a year after the design and PC-1 are finalized. The project has received strong backing from local stakeholders, who view it as vital for regional development and accessibility.
The upgraded airport will serve as a gateway to the scenic north and support international tourism. With better infrastructure, more flights, and modern facilities, authorities expect a surge in both domestic and foreign visitors. This will also benefit local businesses and create new job opportunities.
In the long term, the Skardu International Airport upgrade is seen as a turning point for Gilgit-Baltistan. It aims to promote sustainable growth, encourage foreign investment, and position the region as a key player in Pakistan’s tourism and trade sectors.
