It’s pitiful to see how most of the students in Pakistan do not mull things over when the time comes to decide which subject to choose at the university level. What happens usually is that the students only keep a check on which subject is being studied by the majority of the students, or which subject would ensue in a good financial career. The matter whether the subject is interesting for them or not or whether they will be able to pursue it in an efficient manner is completely ignored by the students. Mostly, students go for Computer Sciences, Business Studies or Engineering even if they are not good at programming and calculation or even if they find sciences extremely boring. But since they have seen people earning lots and lots of money by choosing these fields, they blindly follow their path. What happens as a result is that the students realise their mistake when it’s too late, and have to start their university studies from the scratch with a new subject, or they get fed up of studies. Unfortunately, some are taken to the verge of committing suicide when the subject has been imposed upon them by their social circle. The root cause is that the students do not explore themselves. I believe that God Almighty has blessed every human being with a unique temperament. Where some are born with an inclination towards sciences, often seen with calculators, tools or gadgets in their hands from a very early age, some are born with an artistic or a poetic temperament. Such beings are characterised by their habits of remaining isolated, drawing sketches or reading books. In my opinion, as people grow up, they should start pondering upon what sort of temperament they have been blessed with. People should look inside themselves to see whether God has made them to do wonders in the scientific field, or whether He has blessed them with the exceptional quality of filling canvases with colors or the art of playing with words. If they succeed in understanding what sort of personality they have been given, things fall in place. Career can be easily decided, and happily pursued. As far as a good financial career is concerned, it entirely depends upon people’s confidence on their talent. By confidence on the talent, I mean that people must be completely aware of whether they are really good at the thing they are going for. The confidence leads to devotion, which ultimately leads to a successful practical life. Even if people go for a subject or a field because they think it would result in a good financial career, they are wrong at not bringing in the fact that a good financial career would be formed only if they are good and efficient at it. Having a mere degree in hand does not work. Efficiency and knowledge matter more, which are not possible without interest. Therefore, in order to lead a contented, successful and a happy life, self-exploration is very essential. Money, even if procured, does not result in the satisfaction that is achieved by a thing that evokes interest. The blogger is a student of English Literature at Government College University Lahore.
