LAHORE: The qualifying contest for the 2016 Pakistan segment of World Amateur Golf Cup, backed by Turkish Airlines, took place at the beautiful par-72 Royal Palm Club Golf Course here on Sunday. The competition was fought out over 18 holes on singles stableford format with 98 competitors eyeing the trip to Turkey along with the honour of participation in the World Amateur Golf Cup to be held in Turkey in October 2016. Undoubtedly, champions like Omer Salamat, Sardar Murad, Faisal Sayid, Imran Ali Malik, Husain Hamid and Faisal Ali Malik fought it out with courage and dexterous application of golfing skills but the one who succeeded in emerging as the outright net winner was Farid Malik, a ten handicapper. This talented golfer used the handicap to gain a tactical advantage over his many superior golf playing rivals and managed to accumulate 38 stable ford points to end up in glory by winning the overall first position in net . His nearest challenger was Faisal Ali Malik who played exceedingly well but ended up with 36 points, two points less than the ultimate winner, Farid. During the 18 holes round yesterday, Farid was in full control off the tees and his hitting was a treat to watch. He managed twelve regulation pars and out of these pars, he got stroke advantage on holes 1,7,9,10,14 and 18 and these became birdies. For these scores Farid fetched 18 points and add that to his 12 points for the pars and 8 points for the bogies and the tally of stable points accumulated to a fabulous 38 that turned out to be the best total of the day. And as the points were finally displayed, cheers went up for this very talented golfer who played gutsy golf amongst many champions. By virtue of this victory, Farid has earned the right to be a part of the Grand Finals in Turkey. Faisal was net runner up with 36 points and Imran Chaudhary was third with 36 points. In the race for gross honours, Omer Salamat won the first gross. At the conclusion of the event, the Head of Lahore Branch of the Turkish Airlines, Basin Perolli, awarded prizes to the winners.
