ISLAMABAD – Mayor Sheikh Ansar Aziz has said that provision of clean drinking water to residents is top priority of the local government and a main pipeline would be laid to the Ghazi Brotha Dam to meet the water requirement of the twin cities for the next 50 years. Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif was taking keen interest in the project and the Council of Common Interests (CCI) in its recent meeting had also given its approval, he said. Since the local government institutions could easily be accessed by the public and that was why they could serve them better, he said. He said to provide better transport facilities to the citizens the corporation would run busses on the routes connected with the metro stations. He said that the first business session of the corporation would be held in the mid of this month. The mayor and his deputies are likely to get powers in the next 15 days while the devolution of powers from the Capital Development Authority would be completed within two months. For the provision of recreational facilities to the residents, the local government would expand the Marghzar Zoo, besides upgrading parks, Anser Aziz said. Playgrounds in the city, especially those which remained neglected by the CDA, would be improved so as to provide youth to take part in sports activities, he added. – Taxi scheme in capital soon – He said that the IMC would introduce a proper taxi scheme in the capital so as to provide a proper transport to the people. To a question about health facilities, he said that four small hospitals would be constructed in the city. The mayor said almost 11,000 employees of various departments of the CDA would be placed at the disposal of the corporation. Anser Aziz said a proper solid waste management system would also be introduced for disposal of garbage and its recycling to generate electricity. He said the sanitation staff would be divided among the union councils for their proper utilisation. It was the vision of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif to beautify Islamabad according to world standards and he and his team would do their best to realise the same, he said.
