All over the world, there appear to be more salons, spas and health clinics for women than there are for men. At every nook and corner, each day, a new beauty and wellness club opens up especially designed for a woman’s needs and very seldom do we get to see a one for men. So much so that now dermatologists and dentists even advertise their services and promote themselves by offering facilities and discounts for women and that makes us wonder if our men are simply not into clean and clear skins and whiter teeth. I met Dr Hana Barmawi a few weeks back who is a foreign qualified dentist and aesthetic doctor. Having years of experience in these two subjects as an expert, she knows her craft like the back of her hand. She comes across as a highly intelligent, passionate and driven individual who sets the bar high with dental and skincare acumen of hers and excitedly tells me why people and not just women need to take special care of their skin and teeth. As mentioned earlier, Dr Hana Barmawi, who started out as a trained and skilled dentist, mastered the art of dermatology after studying it in detail. she focuses on quality over and above anything else. For skin, she shows imported sterilisers from Finland, which are both FDA and EU approved. “When I treat a person’s wrinkles or anything to do with their teeth, it’s like I’m treating their life. That entire responsibility is in my hands and I’ve to follow through the commitment I’ve shown and the confidence they’ve placed in me,” she tells me. “My aim is not to keep profits but to keep happy clients.” Dr Hana says she ensures that there’s after treatment service also where the client can reach her anytime and give updates about how the treatment is setting in. While taking a round of the space from which she operates, I could see as many men coming in for their dental treatments and skincare as women. With her knowledge and expertise, Dr Hana has introduced the latest and most innovative dental technology in Pakistan, in adherence to international standard protocol. She is committed to giving a person individual attention and provides a range of treatments to all and not just women. “You see, once you cross your 30s, many unanticipated changes, in both men and women can come about. Your skin stops making collagen after 30. Exposure to chemical-based products and pollution leads to deterioration of the skin. Your skin may lose its natural sheen and that could add to extra stress and we all very well know what stress can do to our skin. Is there anything that you can do to reverse the changes, perhaps yes. Those first deep wrinkles begin to emerge, turning faint lines around the eyes into full blown crow’s feet. In some unfortunate cases, acne decide to make a comeback after teen years or it may also appear for the very first time. This phenomenon is called ‘adult acne’ and is usually hormonal in women. Damage from earlier sunburns and beach holidays begin to appear as blotchy pigmentation and you suddenly seem to have dull and saggy skin,” she says. As far as the teeth are concerned, although one can get a cavity at any age research and studies indicate that has proven that most people develop at least one cavity in their teeth by the age of 30. Cavities mostly occur when your enamel or roots are compromised by microbes in the mouth and can lead to staining of teeth and pain. The consultation fee at Dentalogix, where Dr Hana is available from 1pm to 5:30pm every day is Rs 1,200. With winter around the corner, just waiting to set in completely, many of us experience winter rashes and dry skin, regardless of age and gender. I’ve my appointment filled in with Dr Hana, and so should you.
