ISLAMABAD: Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) chief Sirajul Haq has said the government and the opposition should sit together and reach a consensus on the terms of reference (ToRs) for the judicial commission, which would investigate the Panama leaks involving Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and his family. Addressing a public meeting at Kha’r Stadium in Bajaur on Saturday, Haq said it would be presumed that there was something wrong if the ruling party or the opposition tries to evade the enquiry commission. He said that Pakistan could not progress unless corruption is curbed. He said that Pakistan was under a $70 billion debt, while Pakistanis had $375 billion in their foreign accounts. He said that Pakistan could be put on the road to progress and prosperity by bringing this money back. He said that a “ruthless” accountability of the plunderers was the need of the hour. Haq, who is also member of the Senate of Pakistan, said the JI had tried to unite the opposition on the issue of corruption. He said the JI would to go the masses if the corruption charges against the ruling party and the opposition are proven. He said the British prime minister did not have a house of his own, while Pakistani rulers had palaces and properties in Britain. Referring to the problems of the tribal areas, the JI chief said that corruption was the biggest enemy of the tribal people after the FCR. He said the past and the present governments received billions of dollars from different countries in the name of development in the tribal areas and misappropriated all this money. He said there was no engineering university, medical college or factory in the tribal areas. Haq said that no JI leaders had been named in the Panama leaks or accused of corruption. He said the JI would provide free treatment for five major diseases and give unemployment allowance to young people and old age allowance to senior citizens if it is elected to power. He called upon the rulers to account for the money that had been received from abroad in the name of development in Bajaur, Mohmand, Khyber and Waziristan agencies. He said the new generation of the tribal people did not accept the colonial era legacy, the FCR.
