NEW YORK: A Nashville jury on Saturday found former Vanderbilt football player Brandon Vandenburg guilty of rape after four hours of deliberation. Vandenburg, 23, was found guilty on multiple counts of aggravated rape and aggravated sexual battery after he encouraged teammates to have sex with an unconscious woman he had been dating. Four other former players were also charged in the case but only two were accused of raping and sexually assaulting the woman, according to the Associated Press. The conviction came after six days of testimony that included graphic details of the June 23, 2013 assault. Vandenburg’s attorneys tried to make the case their client was too drunk to form the necessary intent to direct or encourage players he didn’t even know to commit the crime. The jurors did not buy that defense. Prosecutors described Vandenburg as the instigator in the 2013 assault, saying he betrayed the victim by plying her with alcohol and passing out condoms as he videotaped the rapes. Vandenburg was also convicted of one count of unlawful photography. Vandenburg had to face a retrial after he and former teammate Corey Batey had their 2015 convictions thrown out after a juror revealed he had been a victim of statutory rape. Batey was convicted in an April retrial.
