ISLAMABAD: The culprits involved in the mysterious murder of Dr Shahid Nawaz Malik, a renowned cardiologist of the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) couldn’t be traced so far even after the passing of 16 months. The Islamabad Police have ignored several clues during the investigation. The influential mafia doesn’t want a fair and independent investigation of the murder as the crime marks go toward the key office bearers of the PIMS administration and some faculty members, the sources of the victim’s family claimed while talking to this scribe. The victim’s family had approached the Interior Minister Ch. Nisar Ali Khan and top officials of the Islamabad police but no step has been taken so far to make the suspects a part of the investigation process, they added. Dr Shahid Nawaz was shot in the head by unidentified gunmen on February 14, 2015 just when he was coming out of the hospital after performing a surgery. He was rushed to the CMH Hospital in Rawalpindi where he fought for his life for six days. The Margalla Police Station had registered a First Information Report (FIR) on February 14, 2015 under Section 324/34 and later added Section 302. Dr. Shahid was the head of the PIMS Cardiac Department and was among the senior most surgeons in the country. He had the honour to give medical treatment to a number of key figures of the country including the mother of Prime Minister Muhammad Nawaz Sharif, PML-N central leader Raja Zafarul Haq, former ISI chief Lt. Gen (R) Hamid Gul and many others. The victim’s family sources disclosed that Dr. Shahid had pointed out embezzlement of millions of rupees in construction of the PIMS Cardiac Centre and had refused to approve the building despite the pressure of the administration, as he had severe reservations over the work quality. Further, he was facing office politics and tussles with other colleagues, they claimed, saying, Dr. Shahid had neither personal enmity nor did he cause financial or physical loss to anybody. They claimed the incident was a targeted killing by a professional shooter. Meanwhile, people involved in the ‘conspiracy’ are trying to divert the case to other issues, alleging that Dr. Shahid Nawaz Malik could be involved in the killing of a patient. It may be mentioned here that mysterious circumstances and blunders were also witnessed during the whole episode even in the treatment of Dr. Shahid which gave hints of involvement of an insider in the incident. The surveillance cameras installed at the very spot where the doctor was shot at, were unplugged only 25 minutes before as there is recording in cameras only 25 minutes prior to the incident. The family sources of Dr. Shahid said the police personnel deputed for investigation had ignored a number of clues and they never made the key members of the PIMS administration and the faculty as part of the investigation. The PIMS administration had never bothered to pursue the case after the loss of its major asset, they added. A senior official of PIMS said if the seniormost person was targeted and his case was pressed easily than there were question marks on the safety of junior employees in PIMS. When contacted a police officials who had been part of this investigation, said the police had found no evidence of involvement of any PIMS insider or any patient’s family so far. The murder of the famous cardiologist is still blind, he said. He, however, admitted that the PIMS administration had never pursued the case of murder of its Cardiac Department’s head. When approached the Vice Chancellor of PIMS, Prof. Dr. Javed Akram said the incident was shocking for him and other colleagues of Dr. Shahid Nawaz Malik. “The administration has approached the police chief many times to make the case reach a logical end but nothing has happened so far”, he said. The VC admitted the possibility of involvement of an insider of PIMS in the killing of Dr. Shahid. He, however, said it was the responsibility of the police to make the suspected people a part of its investigation. The PIMS administration, he said, was ready to cooperate with the police investigation and give them access to all records available in this regard. He also admitted that the embezzlement of funds in the construction of Cardiac Centre at PIMS, saying, the people who were found involved were facing corruption cases. Dr. Javed Akram said there were clear clues that the killers were the frontmen of someone else and there was a need of a thorough investigation of all relevant facts to solve the case.
