KARACHI: The city government has shown slackness in its first test on Eid-ul-Azha as slow pace of offal disposal has been witnessed in many areas of metropolis. Residents of various localities have complained over the slow disposal of animal waste by the staff of the city district government and its contractors. Residents also complained that the city government and its contractor’s staff were demanding Eiddi (money) for the disposal. In some cases the contractor staff demanded 1,000 rupees for disposing of animal remains. It was observed that the ratio of disposal during the three days of the Eid was slower than it was expected and claimed by the city government. The residents also complained that animals’ remains were lying on the roads and in front of many houses in many parts of the city, making their stench unbearable for residents. Arshad Khan, a resident of F. B Area, said offal and gut were usually disposed of quickly but this time in the district central the lackluster performance of the civic agency created issues for the area people. Deputy City Mayor Arshad Vohra had claimed that all district metropolitan corporations (DMCs) had made arrangements for lifting and burial of sacrificial animals’ offal during the three days of Eid. In this regard, about 5,982 vehicles, 370 dumpers, 258 loaders, 23 trenches and around 15,285 laborers were hired to take part in the offal disposal operation across the city. Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) divided the city in 18 zones, 216 union councils, 74 collection points and 23 trenches for dumping about 20 million offal. Meanwhile, the sanitary staff of the local government was found absent from their duties few days before the Eid as overflowing sewage water was witnessed in various low-lying, Kutchi Abadis, and other localities of the city.
