KARACHI: The Sindh High Court directed the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) on Friday to submit its response to a petition filed by former provincial minister Sharjeel Inam Memon through which he sought to strike his name off Exit Control List (ECL). A division bench headed by Justice Ahmed Ali M Shaikh asked the NAB’s special prosecutor to file comments on the petition within two weeks. The former information minister, who is living in self-exile in London, had moved to the court seeking removal of his name from the ECL. Sharjeel’s lawyer submitted that the federal authorities had placed his name on the ECL without any plausible reason. He added despite repeated attempts his client was not being provided the memorandum regarding placement of his name on the ECL. The counsel informed the judges that Mr Memon wanted to return to the country to face corruption cases but might go back to London again for medical treatment. Therefore, he apprehended that he would not be allowed because of barrier placed on his movement. Citing the federal interior secretary, and the NAB’s director general as respondents, the petitioner pleaded the court to order the authorities concerned to remove his name from the ECL. Sharjeel Memon had been granted bail in two corruption cases, including corruption in the grant of advertisements, and unlawful allotment and adjustment of state land in 43 Dehs of Malir . Earlier this week, the NAB had informed the high court that a complaint against Sharjeel for unlawfully leasing out forest land was at the verification stage.
