The Tony Awards celebrate the people who deliver exceptional performances on stage each night-live, with no chance for a second take. So it should come as no surprise that the folks who really stood out on the red carpet were the ones who understand the power of a first impression. Sometimes, like with the inimitable Billy Porter, those impressions were unapologetically daring. Other times, with guys like Jake Gyllenhaal and Jeff Bridges, they were a little more toned town. And of course you’ve always got men like Bryan Cranston and James Corden who push the envelope but don’t go entirely out there. Always, though, there’s something impressive to be seen. Here are the looks you can’t afford to miss. At the 73rd Annual Tony Awards, Broadway’s biggest stars swapped the stage for the red carpet, but that did not mean they left the theatrics at home. Framed by 20,000 rainbow-hued roses that had been spray-painted by hand in honour of WorldPride, actors like Lucy Liu shone bright in jewel-toned ensembles, while others like Judith Light glowed in metallics. Meanwhile, Billy Porter stole the show in a red-and-pink Celestino Couture suit made of recycled curtains from Kinky Boots. Eye-popping colours were most notable at tonight’s event, with dresses and suits in shades that matched the rainbow wall behind them. Lucy Liu, Ashley Park, Samira Wiley and Laura Donnelly (in Marchesa) all shone in their bright dresses.
