The inflation has impacted the consumers with the onset of Ramadan; foods, groceries, liquids garments and house rents have been increased. People are annoyed about the abrupt higher price levels. Commissioner Karachi Iftikhar Shallwani said that he has directed the officers concerned to ensure the sale of fruit, vegetables and other daily-use items according to the official price lists, adding that he visits the markets daily. “During 10 days of Ramadan we have imposed fine of Rs 6,387,500 while 1,915 cases were registered against shopkeepers and the 51 shopkeepers were sent to jail, for not following the government price list”, spokesman Commissioner Karachi Despite the fact that Karachi Commissioner up till 10th Ramadan, for price checking visited several areas of Karachi, and imposed fines- inflation waves couldn’t be controlled yet. “Although action is being taken against high rate sellers but goods’ prices are (still) not coming down”, said a shopkeeper The availability of category 1 is in some areas, including Clifton, North Nazimabad, DHA, Burns Road and Gulshan-e-Iqbal. Category B fruits are available at different areas including Korangi, Malir Landhi in the market. Karachiites are turning to the fruit stalls having fewer tendencies. Tanker mafia is also eager to grab money in the holy month; they are selling water at their desired rates. A small-sized tank is at Rs900 and medium-sized at Rs 2,000. On the other hand, citizens from Kornagi District claim that in water line, there is no water, therefore they have to purchase. A citizen anxiously said that every year, the shopkeepers and sellers in order to make their Eid magnificent and to get feast in the Ramadan, they try to make money by trapping money from the consumers’ pockets. A shop owner, Mansoor expressing his feeling over current increase in products and foods said, “Don’t ask about price rises and don’t talk about this issue since I am speechless that government is making us cry”. Abd-Ur-Raheem Nasarullah, the Islamic scholar said, “The last in Ramadan the neighbors of Masjid sent us Iftari and dinner, but now no one dares to provide it to us”. It is due to price rises, he added. PTI Karachi President Khurram Sher Zaman said that the Sindh government has completely failed to control inflation in the holy month of Ramazan. “Essential commodities are not being sold at any market at as per the Commissioner’s Karachi price list. When we had meeting with Commissioner Karachi, he assured us that the essential items would be sold according to official price list. But it is sad that this promise has not been fulfilled as of today.” Sher Zaman said.
