LAHORE: The City Traffic Police has issued challans to more than 300,000 owners of unregistered vehicles, informally designed number plates as well as motorcycles without registration across the city during the current year. Traffic police spokesman said that 307,324 challans issued to illegal number plates and those vehicles and motorcyclists who drove without registration during current year. He added that on the directions of Chief Traffic Office (CTO) DIG Traffic Ahmad Mobeen, divisional SPs and circle in-charges supervised the campaign in their areas and took strict measures to eradicate the trend of non-prescribed number plates, vehicles without number plates and without registration on city roads. He said that special squads have been constituted for the crackdown against illegal activities on Ring Road interchanges while emergency squads on The Mall, Jail road, Main Boulevard, Canal road, Shalimar Link road, Ferozepur road and Township took action against the law breakers. DIG Syed Mobeen said that the use of illegal green (official) number plates, tinted windows, vehicles without number plates and other type of non prescribed number plates was violation of the law. He added special arrangements have also been made to control traffic jams in the city. Incorrect parking of vehicles on the city roads is strictly being checked and negligence on part of traffic police officials would not be tolerated, he said. DIG traffic directed wardens to take action against violators of traffic rules in accordance with the law and keep a vigilant eye on suspicious vehicles. Strict action in accordance with the law has also been ordered against vehicles moving in the city without number plates, he added. He said traffic wardens have also been directed to work with dedication and commitment and ensure smooth traffic flow so that congestion could be averted. The CTO stressed upon citizens to cooperate with traffic police to make the journey safer for themselves and others. While emphasising the need for awareness and education among citizens rather than ticketing and fines, Mobeen said that he has directed the traffic wardens to educate citizens instead of ticketing. He added that rickshaws, wagons and commercial vehicles are considered to be main hurdle in the easy flow of traffic on narrow roads especially southern Lahore.
