The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) Sukkrur on Sunday raided the Khairpur Food Office on complaints about nepotism during distribution of wheat bags. According to sources, the accountability watchdog’s team checked the record of the department and took away Head Clerk Ghulam Akbar Lashari for the probe, besides sealing the warehouses of the department. Residents of the area had lodged complaints of favoritism by the department’s staff while distributing gunny bags. On April 26, wheat worth Rs 12 million was allegedly stolen from the go-downs in Sindh. This was revealed during raids by the NAB at the go-downs along with a magistrate. The raids at warehouses of Kandhkot and Kashmore were carried out on the orders of the NAB chairman. A large number of sacks of wheat were found mixed with sand, while many other sacks were completely filled with sand. An inquiry has been launched against the provincial food department. Such an irregularity, with the holy month of Ramazan just round the corner, seems to be an attempt to create wheat shortage during the month.
