ISLAMABAD: With the arrival of the New Year, the dream of making the capital city crime-free has been shattered, as five cases of rape and two incidents of murder were reported in just first 10 days of January 2017. Besides, five women were allegedly abducted, while robbers succeeded to strike 10 times in the federal capital. Some eight cars and motorcycles were also lifted from different areas of the city, putting a question mark on the “dismal” performance of capital police and ant-car lifting cell. According to details, two murders were occurred in the precincts of Lohi Bher and Golar police stations. Out of 5 kidnapped women, police have succeeded to recover only two but culprits are still at large. Last week, a social activist and a university professor Salman Haider was also “abducted” from the city. Moreover, five women were allegedly raped in the precincts of I-9, Bhara Kahu, Koral and Karachi Company police, whereas a minor child was also allegedly molested. In ten incidents of robberies during first 10 days of January 2017, muggers and thieves deprived citizens of valuables worth million of rupees, while police could not do anything except registration of FIRs. When contacted, a spokesman for capital police said that performance of police was being assessed on a daily basis. He, however, admitted that there was room for improvement. He said that high-ups of the department were taking several measures to improve the law and order situation in the city, including patrolling, intelligence sharing and making Rescue 15 more effective.
