The Supreme Court on Saturday issued a notice to the Indus Water Commission (IWC) over a petition filed against water theft from River Indus. A two-member apex court bench comprising Chief Justice Mian Saqib Nisar heard the petition. The petitioner contended that India was stealing water from River Indus, hence route of Marala Link Canal should be changed. After hearing the arguments, the chief justice issued notice to the IWT commission and sought report in 10 days. On December 30, Chief Justice Mian Saqib Nisar had heard a petition alleging that water was being stolen from River Ravi and Abasia Link Canal by India and sought a report from Punjab Irrigation Department. “Why is India stealing our water?” the chief justice had asked. “We will not let India steal Pakistan’s water.” Published in Daily Times, January 6th 2019.
