Sir: Water is a basic human need. Each person on world require at least 20 to 50 liters of clean safe water a day for drinking, cooking, and simply keeping themselves clean. Polluted water is not just dirty we can say it is deadly. Today, nearly one billion people in the developing world don’t have access to clean water. Every human have right to access clean water and to take essential step toward improving living standards. Domestic water supplies are one of the fundamental requirements for human life. Pakistan is facing water shortage problem is the most critical problem of different countries we can say that both the urban and rural areas suffer from water shortage problem. Water shortage involves water stress, water deficit and water crisis. The reduction of water shortage is a goal of different countries and government. The causes are lack of water and pollution overuse of water due to over use of water then shortage occurs. Water wastage and some restrictions of government are caused by lack of investment in infrastructure or technology to draw water from rivers, aquifer or different water sources or insufficient human capital to satisfy the demand of water. Every continent around the world affected by the problem of water shortage. Different solutions are to solve the problem of water shortage with the help of education awareness provide person to change the consumption and lifestyle, should invest new technologies in different areas where aquifers are drying up and rainwater is increasingly unpredictable innovation is needed. Many developing countries are adopting different strategy of water pricing that needs to be implemented in the Pakistan for better and efficient use of water. The governments should concentrate on education, producing more fresh water and reducing the waste. One process could be part of the solution of water shortage if we work on recycling that provides large volume of water. But very effective purification methods are necessary to preserve the safety of recycled water. Recycling is very important because we face problem of water shortage. Water recycling is reusing treated wastewater for beneficial purpose such as agricultural, landscape irrigation, toilet flushing, industrial processes. Recycled water can satisfy most water demand. We waste a huge amount of water during monsoon. Our canal system is inefficient adding to this shortage due to lack of dams and proper controls on water usage. Lastly, the government should take some steps to overcome water shortage in Pakistan. Government should construct dams immediately. Government should construct dams immediately and also work on the already constructed dams that are mismanaged. SHAZIA ALLAUDDIN Karachi Published in Daily Times, November 6th 2018.
