Justice Ali Akbar Qureshi of Lahore High Court on Tuesday restrained traffic wardens for making videos of citizens, including lawyers and journalists and issued them challan tickets for violations and uploading the same on social media. The judge observed, “Traffic wardens can only challan an offender and have no right to ridicule anyone.” The judge observed that law would take its course if any traffic warden is found involved in such illegal activity again as they had no right except issuing challan ticket to an offender and impounding a vehicle on certain violations. The judge also turned down a request of Punjab Safe Cities Authority Head Akbar Nasir Khan and summoned Chief Traffic Officer (r) Captain Malik Liaquat today (Wednesday) to explain his position on this issue. The judge was hearing a petition filed by Advocate Muhammad Azhar Siddique challenging the conduct of traffic wardens. Published in Daily Times, September 3rd 2018.
