Muslims across the city observed ‘Youm-e-Ashura’ – the tenth day of the Islamic month of Muharram with religious solemnity and reverence on Friday. Reportedly, dozens of massive processions were carried out in the city and its adjoining regions. The central procession of Ashura was taken out from Markazi Imam Bargah Gulistan-e-Marfat on College Road, which was joined by dozens of small processions. Meanwhile, strict security measures were implemented by police and district administration as about 5,600 policemen were deployed on the routes of processions to guard the mourners. Besides, mobile phone services were suspended in the district and control rooms were set up while CCTV cameras were also installed to avoid any untoward incident. Moreover, Deputy Commissioner (DC) Dr Shoaib Tariq Warriach, City Police Officer (CPO) Moeen Masood inspected various procession routes to analyse the security arrangements. Anti-polio drive to kick off from Sept 24 District Health Department is set to initiate an anti-polio drive in Gujranwala starting from September 24. The department’s teams, accompanied by policemen, will visit every house to administer anti-polio drops to children.
