During a hearing on Sunday, Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Mian Saqib Nisar barred Karachi Development Authority (KDA) from demolishing the houses near Nasir Jump in Korangi and said that justice would be served to everyone. While hearing a case on houses being razed in Korangi, the CJP remarked, “Those who legally own property near Nasir Jump in Korangi area would have their houses protected.” During the hearing, the residents of the area said that KDA was bulldozing their houses because the authority believed that they were built on land set aside for public amenities. The petitioners told the top judge that they were also sent notices by the development body. They further questioned by why they had been allotted the land in the first place if it had been earmarked for public facilities. The CJP assured the petitioners that justice would be served and then directed KDA to stop from taking further action. He also sought record from KDA and Sindh Board of Revenue (BOR). The authorities have been conducting a drive against ‘illegal structures’ and encroachments in the metropolis since quite a long time. During the drive, the relevant authorities demolish the houses and buildings said to be built on amenity plots. In addition to houses, a number of marriage halls have also been demolished in different areas of the city during similar drives. Published in Daily Times, September 3rd 2018.
