Students and people from various walks of life participated in an awareness walk to create awareness on organ donation in the city on Sunday. The walk was organised by Sindh Institute of Urology and Transplantation (SIUT) in collaboration with Human Organ Transplantation Authority Pakistan (HOTA), Pakistan Society of Nephrology (PSN), Pakistan Association of Urological Surgeons (PAUS) and Transplantation Society of Pakistan (TSP) to create awareness on organ donation to save lives. Giving the details of the motive behind the walk, Sindh Institute of Urology and Transplantation Director Dr Adibul Hasan Rizvi said that the walk was aimed at promoting wider awareness in the society for increased organ donation. He disclosed that a series of programmes had been initiated by SIUT to save lives of patients suffering from organ failure. He urged the people to come forward and promote the cause. “The deceased organ donation is an important human issue in our society, which needs support from all segments of society,” he said, adding: “Every year 200,000 people in the country die on account of organ failure.” He added that the concept of organ donation after death was being encouraged all over the world to save lives. Dr Rizvi, who is a prominent transplant surgeon and has played a vital role in introducing transplant surgery in the country, said more lives could be saved if people become member of organ donation and share the message to their near and dear ones.
