ISLAMABAD: Former prime minister Nawaz Sharif was on Monday examined by a five-member medical board constituted by the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) at the Adiala Jail over complaints of deteriorating health condition. The medical team, also equipped with a mobile laboratory, conducted several tests and later suggested shifting the jailed former prime minister to cardiac centre of the PIMS for proper treatment. While blood tests and urine tests of Nawaz Sharif returned almost normal on Monday, some more tests as well as echocardiography will be done today. The patient will be re-examined by the same medical board after the results of the medical tests. Earlier, a medical team led by Rawalpindi Institute of Cardiology chief Major General (r) Dr Azhar Mehmood Kiyani visited the Adiala Jail and carried out medical check-up of Nawaz Sharif. “As per medical examination and test reports of Mr Nawaz Sharif, there is no clue of chest pain. However, a rise in heart beat has been witnessed which indicates dehydration. This may lead to diabetic ketoacidosis which is a medical emergency and can even precipitate cardiac arrest,” according to the medical report issued by Dr Kiyani. Following the medical report, superintendent of Adiala Jail in a letter to Inspector General of Prisons suggested that Nawaz Sharif be hospitalized for rehydration in the form of intravenous fluids. Accordingly, the caretaker government directed the PIMS administration to form a medical board to cross-check the report issued by Dr Kiyani. The PIMS formed a five-member medical board with Dr Aijaz Qadeer as chairman and Head of Cardiology Dr Naeem Malik, Medical Specialist Dr Shajee Siddiqui, Dr Sohail Tanvir and Dr Mashood as members. Source says Nawaz Sharif has refused to shift to the PIMS on the recommendations of the medical board. However, he gave no reason for his refusal. Analysts are of the view that the former prime minister wants to be admitted to the RIC in a bid to garner sympathies of the people of Rawalpindi where PML-N is facing a tough competition in tomorrow’s general election. An insider said that party leaders also feel more convenient to see their leader at the RIC instead of PIMS. A doctor at PIMS wondered that despite the fact that whole second floor of the PIMS cardiac centre was hurriedly readied by the administration, the former prime minister was not brought to the hospital for treatment till the filing of this report. Meanwhile, President Mamnoon Hussain telephoned caretaker Prime Minister Nasirul Mulk and asked him to ensure ‘complete medical treatment’ of Nawaz Sharif. Published in Daily Times, July 24th 2018.
