GUJRANWALA: The Gujranwala deputy commissioner (DC) Dr Shoaib Tariq Warriach on Sunday vowed to implement the Election Commission of Pakistan’s (ECP) code of conduct in its true spirit and essence. Reportedly, he visited the Gujranwala press club and said that all measures would be ensured to conduct free, fair and impartial elections, and urged the media to cooperate with the district administration and play a constructive role. The press club president Tariq Munir Butt, general secretary Hafiz Shahid Munir, senior journalists including Malik Muhammad Akram, Muhammad Azam Butt and others were also present on the occasion. Dr Shoaib Warriach asserted that besides installation of CCTV cameras in sensitive polling stations, effective measures were being adopted to maintain law and order in the district. “Conducting transparent elections is our first priority, and we need full support from journalists and the media groups,” he said. Meanwhile, the press club office bearers presented issues of the general public while the deputy commissioner assured to resolve them as soon as possible including improvement of sewerage system and cleanliness. Clerk arrested An anti-corruption team on Sunday arrested a clerk of excise and taxation department for receiving a bribe of Rs 30,000. Reportedly, a citizen Muhammad Akram Butt filed an application accusing clerk Karamat Shah of demanding bribe from him to exempt him from property tax. Meanwhile, following the directives of director of anti-corruption the Sialkot’s circle officer, along with magistrate, raided on the office of excise department and arrested the clerk red handed. FIA teams arrest nine human traffickers The Federal Intelligence Agency (FIA) teams on Sunday launched a crackdown against human traffickers, and arrested nine suspects from Sialkot, Hafizabad and Gujranwala. Reportedly, the FIA deputy director Mufakhir Adeel informed that inspectors Zahid Farooq and Mohsin Waheed along with their respective teams arrested Salamat Khan, Atif Iqbal, Salman Qayyum, Kashif Ali, Zaigham Ahsan, Muhammad Shahrukh, Saqib Hameed, Ihalimd Hussain and Salman Aslam during raids.
