Sir: I am a fairly apolitical person. I have never voted, nor have I pinned my hopes for a better Pakistan on any politician or political party. However, I still somehow managed to receive a text message from the Pakistan Tehrik-e-Insaf (PTI) today. The message asked me to joint PTI Chief Imran Khan at Lahore’s Khayban-e-Iqbal XX Park on July 12 for a rally. This is very curious. Since I am not a member of the PTI and have never given the party any contact information whatsoever. This can only mean that they acquired my phone number without my consent. The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) must look into this once and for all. It is illegal to obtain phone numbers from third parties without the consent of the owner of the SIM, and if the PTI is guilty of engaging such practices then it is shameful. The ECP must find out if other parties are doing this as well. All laws must be respected while campaigning for the general elections. WAKAS MOHAMMAD Lahore Published in Daily Times, July 13th 2018.
