Karachi: Apart from the police, around 2,000 Rangers personnel were deployed in and outside the polling stations to avoid rigging and misconduct in the voting process in the hotly contested by-polls on provincial PS114 seat. Minor uproar was witnessed at Awais Karni Public School polling station set up in Chanesar Goth when workers of two political parties, PPP and MQM-P clashed as Pakistan Peoples Party’s candidate, Saeed Ghani, was refused entry into the polling station despite having an ECP letter. Following the incident the voting process was briefly halted at polling stations number 79, 85, 86, 87 and 90 which later was resumed after additional contingents of the Rangers were called in. PPP and MQM-Pakistan workers also scuffled in Defence View area of the constituency. Meanwhile Rangers arrested a man from a polling station of Chanesar Goth. “The Unconcerned man was stopped many times from entering the polling station but he constantly refused to comply with the orders, hence the Rangers arrested him”, security sources confirmed. However, speaking to the media later, Saeed Ghani said a relative of his, who is mentally disturbed, has been detained by the Rangers. A woman, present at the polling station tried to resist the Rangers personnel from arresting the man who was trying to cast fake vote at a polling station in Chanessor Goth. Leader of MQM Pakistan Farooq Sattar who was stopped by PPP’s workers outside a polling station alleged that he was tortured. MQM Pakistan leader Amir Khan alleged that rigging was done under Sindh government’s patronage. Leader of PTI Dr. Arif Alvi expected the real rigging to start at 3 p.m. The Muhajir and Sindh cards will not work, he added. There are a total of 193,000 registered voters in the constituency, according to the Election Commission of Pakistan. Published in Daily Times, July 10th , 2017.
