Sir: Cases of assaults on minors, including their rape and murder, are on the rise. It seems that not a day passes where we do not hear a story about someone losing his or her child to senseless violence. It makes people like me afraid to send my child to school. It is not just the fact that there are dangerous people lurking in every corner, it is also that every corner seems to have become dangerous, as well. I do not know about other parents but I am still not over the security issues that we faced up until a few months ago. After the Army Public School (APS) attack in 2014, it is not as the situation drastically improved. There was one security threat after another, with schools even shutting down under the guise of vacations. For many of us, this is just becoming our everyday life. However, for parents, it is so much harder to keep moving forward. What are we supposed to do to keep our children safe? I was never a proponent of being a helicopter parent, and this style of parenting used to irk me. However, with the given circumstances I find myself becoming more and more like the very thing I detested once upon a time. I do not know what to do for my children to keep them safe and the state does not seem to care. In addition, why would they? Like as Kulsoom Nawaz was taken to London for treatment, these people take their children to other countries for their safety and security. However, what about all the rest of the Pakistanis? What about people who cannot leave. Forget that, what about people who do not want to leave? Where do we fit into the spectrum? If my child is scared of school, should I tell him his mother is not Nawaz Sharif? Or should I tell him Imran Khan raised his sons abroad but wants you to remain here? I hope and pray for Malala’s parents and their sanity each time, I see her being attacked. Even if a child survives, all we can do is tear them down. Is this country safe for our children anymore? Is there a solution? All we can do is ask questions. KAINAT FATIMA Lahore Published in Daily Times, July 10th 2018.
